I learned how to avoid avocado hand from the masters of avocados – Jan DeLyser and Marji Morrow of the California Avocado Commission.
After dire warnings about the scourge of “Avocado Hand” injuries made the rounds last year, I thought I’d put together a little video to talk about the easiest way to avoid it, and the only tool you need for avocados.
But, because I’m *extra* like this, I can’t just stop there.
What does Avocado Hand have to do with SmartWool socks? More than you’d think!
I decided to put a gizmo I saw on the internet a few months back to work, and tried my … hand … at ripening avocados in the Avocado Sock.
I used my friend Amber, who recently moved back to the U.S. from an overseas military assignment, as a guinea pig, and Amber shared her experiences buying avocados in Europe. Spoiler alert: They were often spoiled.
We also tested one of the greatest mysteries about avocados out there:
Why do some have giant pits, and some have tiny little nothing pits, and how can you tell without cutting?
A grower told me a theory, and we put it into practice – with science!
Have fun learning all about avocados, just in time for the largest avocado consuming event of the year: The Super Bowl.
