PRESS RELEASE: (Williamsville, NY) – As we enter into a New Year, we have even more determination to turn things around for the better and make positive changes in 2021. Whether those changes are healthier eating habits, to more exercise, or to simply make better choices for the environment, starting the year off on the right foot is something Tops BB #:103173 is able to help you with simply by shopping in our stores.
At Tops all year long we make it a priority in our day-to-day decisions to adopt practices that help protect our environment and to provide affordable, accessible food to everyone. Recently in our produce departments we’ve implemented new eco-fiber trays, shifting away from foam, and are working with like-minded companies like Apeel™ that allows Tops to seal in moisture and oxygen in our produce, prolonging its shelf life and decreasing the amount that ends up in the waste stream.
Yet one of the biggest changes came later in 2020 with the expansion of the Flashfood program at Tops. Launched initially at six stores in Western New York, this innovative and interactive in-store program allows customers to purchase food nearing its sell-by date to save money and to help reduce food waste. Items like fresh produce, meat, deli, bakery, and dairy, may be listed at up to 50% off on the Flashfood app and then are available for pick up at one of the designated Tops Friendly Market locations. Because of its tremendous success, Tops recently expanded the program by adding 21 more stores in Buffalo, NY, two stores in the Chautauqua County, NY region and four in the Hudson Valley region of NY.
“At Tops, social responsibility and sustainability have always been at the core of our mission, upholding standards that ensure we reduce environmental waste and energy consumption while providing customers with sustainably sourced, high-quality products, at a great value,” said Jeff Culhane, senior vice president of sales and merchandising for Tops. “The Flashfood program fits right into our business model and we’re excited to bring this unique, money saving opportunity to our customers.”
“Western New York has been a great region for us and we’re very excited to continue expanding with Tops Friendly Markets,” said Eric Tribe, vice president of partnerships at Flashfood. “Tops Friendly Markets has shown they are willing to move fast and innovate to bring Flashfood to more communities, helping many more families that are looking for great deals while also reducing their waste.”
