Supply levels will plummet further than expected for the next two weeks. California will ship historically low volume, while production in Florida and Mexico (into South Texas) is coming to an end. The industry will be in an extreme demand-exceeds-supply situation for the next two weeks.

Rain is expected in all California growing regions starting Tuesday, March 21 through Wednesday, March 22.

Scenic Fruit Company of Gresham, Oregon is recalling frozen organic strawberries sold to Costco, Aldi, KeHE, Vital Choice Seafood, PCC Community Markets and frozen organic tropical blend sold to Trader Joe’s due to an outbreak of Hepatitis A illnesses.

California Splendor, Inc. of San Diego, CA, is recalling certain lots of 4-lb. bags of Kirkland Signature Frozen Organic Strawberries that were sold at Costco stores in Los Angeles, Hawaii and two San Diego business centers, due to an outbreak of Hepatitis A illnesses.

Spring has sprung, but the cold weather missed its exit cue. A cold front is sweeping the U.S. early this week, bringing rain and unseasonably chilly temperatures.

"Times are tough, but the town of Pajaro, the surrounding communities and the strawberry farming families are more resilient than ever and we will work together to recover,” said Rick Tomlinson, California Strawberry Commission President.

Western iceberg and romaine markets suffer from the cold, but lettuce prices remain unaffected. However, growers are reporting cold-related injuries such as blisters, peeling, and pink ribbing. 

In 2022, Mexican agricultural exports registered a new record with a value of $50.1 billion compared to the $44.7 billion in 2021, reflecting an increase of 12.2 percent, according to the Mexican Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (SADER).

Given the perishability of the strawberries and the number of truckloads shipped, it’s no surprise that Blue Book Services receives a number of claims involving strawberries each year. But in 2022, we seemed to have an unusually high number.
